In 2023, the petrochemicals segment had the highest energy consumption within Canada's chemical industry, at some 50.51 petajoules. Ranking second and third were the segments of chemical fertilizers and other basic organic chemicals, with a consumption of approximately 62.49 and 39.52 petajoules, respectively. That same year, the total energy consumed by Canada's chemical industry amounted to some 258.6 petajoules.
