The volume of containers handled in ports in the European Union (EU-27) generally increased between 2011 and 2018. In 2019 and 2020, however, container throughput of EU ports declined year-on-year, mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, European ports saw an uptake in the volume of processed containers, peaking at over 98 million TEUs.
