Number of public pension funds founded per decade worldwide 1940-2025
The number of public pension funds (PPFs) established globally peaked in the years leading up to 1940, with a total of 53 PPFs created. In the following decades, the growth of the number of PPFs continued, as the number of new funds created each decade fluctuated between 31 and 51. Following 2025, nine new funds were introduced. PPFs are found across most countries worldwide, but the North America region had the most assets under management.
