The Consumer Price Index gauges the price changes in a basket of goods and services in a defined time period. In Ecuador, the CPI compared to the same month of the previous year has been experiencing a steep upward trend since April 2021. June 2022 registered the largest monthly inflation rate since, at least, the beginning of 2019. That month, the CPI stood 4.23 percentage points higher than in May 2021. By contrast, prices registered a negative growth rate during the second half of 2020 and the first half of 2021.
