In the fiscal year 2023, newly built zero energy houses (ZEH) accounted for **** percent of new custom-built detached houses that were built by building contractors in Japan. Figures increased steadily in recent years. The share of ZEH constructed by home builders was much higher in comparison. Building contractors often are small, local companies, and customers have a high degree of freedom to design the house themselves. In contrast, house builders are bigger companies that usually have sales offices nationwide. Here, customers have less freedom in designing the home themselves as they choose from standard equipment and floor plans.
