Polish utility PGE has the highest installed coal power capacity of any major utility in Europe. As of July 2024, PGE's coal power plants had a combined capacity of more than 13 gigawatts. This figure includes the lignite-fueled Bełchatów power station, which is the largest coal power plant and biggest polluter in the European Union. The coal plant is responsible for around 30 million metric tons of CO2 released every year.
