In 2023, around 595 million square meters of housing stocks were expropriated in Shanghai, decreasing from the previous year. Although growing again since 2018, the recent expropriation figures are still significantly smaller than the figures during the first ten years of this century, when the rapid development and expansion of Shanghai resulted in large-scale demolitions and regenerations of the city center.
