The European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) covers the emissions from many activities, such as cement production and aviation. In 2024, fuel combustion, mainly from the power sector, was responsible for the highest emissions among all activities covered by the EU ETS, at 516.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e). The refining of mineral oil produced the second-highest emissions that year, at just over 100 MtCO₂e.
