Natural gas exports from Italy 2005-2023

In 2023, natural gas exports from Italy amounted to over 2.6 billion metric tons, after peaking at some 4.6 billion metric tons the previous year.
While natural gas supply in Italy is still strongly dependent on imports, the exported natural gas is sourced from Italian strategic stocks, which are among the largest in Europe. The decision to exploit them was probably a consequence of the inauguration of the TAP (Trans Adriatic Pipeline) importing gas from Azerbaijan since 2021 and the natural gas prices rising in 2022.
