Stationary installations covered by the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), such as power plants, refineries, and steel mills, emitted more than 920 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2024. Stationary installations in Germany produced roughly 266 MtCO₂e that year. Italy followed, with verified emissions of just over 100 MtCO₂e. Several of the biggest emitters in the EU are coal-fired power plants in Germany and Poland.
The EU ETS covers emissions from more than 15,000 stationary installations.
