In 2023, more than half of the tree cover loss in Brazil was due to commodity driven deforestation. This was followed by shifting agriculture, whereby small to medium-scale forests and shrublands are converted for agricultural purposes. By comparison, wildfires were the the cause of roughly 5,800 hectares lost.

Includes all vegetation taller than five meters. Forest loss means mortality or removal of trees due to various factors, and does not associate with deforestation only. Loss from shifting agriculture can be associated to small and medium scale, temporary or permanent deforestation. Meanwhile, loss from commodity-driven deforestation refers to large-scale deforestation linked primarily to commercial agricultural expansion.
