In 2022, the majority of agricultural land was used for permanent meadows and pastures. More than 3.2 billion hectares of agricultural land were used in this fashion. Cropland is mostly used temporarily till harvest. Orchards are examples of the less common permanent use of cropland. Approximately 189.4 million hectares were used as permanent cropland compared to 1.08 billion hectares of temporary cropland.
