In 2023, approximately 273 thousand individuals were treated in mental health wards in Italy for the first time during that year. This statistic shows the average age of new patients diagnosed with severe mental health problems, by diagnosis. The average age for all disorders was over 39 years. In particular, new patients diagnosed with depression were on average 52.6 years old. It comes with no surprise that the most represented age group among new mental health patients was the one comprising people between 45 and 54 years old.
