In 2023, the most common active ingredients in terms of consumption among class C generic drugs in Italy were those related to tranquilizers. As a matter of fact, lorazepam, alprazolam, and lormetazepam were the three most consumed active ingredients in the country, with market shares of 22 percent, 13 percent, and eight percent, respectively. These three benzodiazepine medications led the ranking of generic drugs which cost is not covered by the Italian National Healthcare Service.
