Enteric fermentation was by far the largest source of Brazil's agriculture emissions from within the farm gate in 2022, accounting for almost 70 percent of total emissions (excluding energy-related emissions). Enteric fermentation is a part of the digestive process in ruminant animals and produces large amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Some of the biggest methane-polluting meat and dairy companies are based in Brazil, such as JBS and Marfrig.
