Share of transgender and non-binary persons in Canada 2021, by age

As reported by the most recent Canadian census data, 0.3 percent of the Canadian population aged 15-19 were non-binary. While gender non-binarity concerns a small portion of the population, this proportion is much higher than among Canadians over 35. A similar observation can be made regarding transgender people: while the trans population represents only 0.19 percent of Canadians, 0.44 percent of 15-19 year olds were transgender men or women, compared with 0.13 percent among 50-54 year olds.

Gender includes the following concepts:
- gender identity, which refers to the gender that a person feels internally and individually;
- gender expression, which refers to the way a person presents their gender, regardless of their gender identity, through body language, aesthetic choices or accessories (e.g., clothes, hairstyle and makeup), which may have traditionally been associated with a specific gender.
A person's gender may differ from their sex at birth, and from what is indicated on their current identification or legal documents such as their birth certificate, passport or driver's licence. A person's gender may change over time.
