The energy company RWE, headquartered in Essen, was the leading producer of electricity in Germany. In 2023, it produced roughly 40 terawatt-hours of electricity. LEAG (Lausitz Energie AG) followed with 38.7 terawatt-hours. This German company produces power from lignite, which in 2022 made up 18 percent of Germany's power mix.
