The European Union has seen a marked reduction in both the absolute and per capita consumption of raw materials since the global financial crisis of 2007-2008, with the EU consuming around six trillion tonnes of raw materials in 2020, compared to 8.3 trillion in 2007. Raw material consumption is a key economic and environmental indicator in the European Union's efforts to stimulate a transition towards a sustainable and green economy, mainly through its Green Deal industrial plan.
