The EU spent more than 227 billion euros on defense in 2023. France recorded the largest defense expenditure, at 51.6 billion euros, followed by Germany at 46.3 billion euros. Italy, that has the largest army in the EU, spent 5.6 billion euros on defense, less than half of France.
