The Western United States has been heavily affected by extreme drought conditions in recent years. Drought began to develop in the summer of 2020, and by August 2021 some ** percent of the area of the Western United States was under severe or exceptional drought conditions. These conditions carried on throughout 2022, but began to improve in the first half of 2023 as several Western States were hit by heavy rain and snowfall. By May 2025, just under ******* of the area of the Western United States was unaffected by drought conditions.
