UK: public EV charging points by region or country July 2024
London's dominance in the UK's electric vehicle charging infrastructure is clear, with over 20,700 public charging points as of July 2024. This figure is more than double that of the South East, the second-ranked region. However, the distribution of charging points across the UK reveals a complex landscape of regional disparities and varying types of charging technology.
Regional variations in charging infrastructure
While London leads in overall charging points, other regions excel in specific areas. The South East, for instance, boasts the largest network of rapid charging points, with about 1,700 installations. Scotland follows closely behind, while London ranks sixth in rapid charging availability despite its overall lead. This suggests that different regions are prioritizing various aspects of charging infrastructure development.
Charging technology and accessibility
The UK's charging network encompasses a range of technologies and accessibility options. Alternating current (AC) chargers are the most prevalent, with around 65,800 points recorded in the third quarter of 2024. Accessibility varies, with over 30,100 points offering unrestricted access in the second quarter of 2023, while nearly 37,800 had restricted access. As of July 2024, the UK had about 12,470 rapid charging points with at least one connector providing a charging speed of 50 kilowatts or more. This represented less than a quarter of all public charging points.
