Economic losses due to climate change are estimated at ***** trillion U.S. dollars between 2025 and 2100 under a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario. If global temperature increase is limited to *** degrees Celsius, climate change losses during the same period could be lowered to ***** trillion U.S. dollars. This would result in over ***** trillion U.S. dollars in avoided losses when comparison to the BAU scenario. Less than *** trillion U.S. dollars of climate finance would be required worldwide between 2025 and 2050 for adaptation and mitigation, or roughly ** percent of avoided losses.
Estimated losses are based on direct economic impacts of increased weather-related and other uninsurable damages, increased production costs, productivity losses, and health costs. Not accounting for capital losses caused by stranded assets, losses to nature and biodiversity, or those from increased conflict and human migration.
