Between 2014 and 2024, the return on equity (ROE) of the banking industry in Finland increased overall, but also fluctuated significantly. A notable drop in the ROE occurred in the second quarter of 2020 due to weak economic conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. After this sharp decline, the ROE stabilized in the following quarters, until another sharp drop in the first quarter of 2022. In the fourth quarter of 2024, the ROE of the banking industry in Finland stood at **** percent.

For example, the subsidiary in country X of a bank domiciled in country Y is included both in data for countries X and Y (for the latter as part of the consolidated entity). The sample of banks is unbalanced and reviewed annually.
