Share of farmer households in debt in India 2003-2019

Based on the NSS survey conducted in 2019, over half of agricultural households were in debt across India. This was an increase compared to 2003. Estimates put farmer debt at around 170 million rupees as of 2021. This has been one of the leading reasons among farmer suicides in the country.
