A survey in 2025 found that, for roughly two-thirds of nurses in Canada, high workloads and a lack of staff were very important factors to consider when leaving their job. Lack of work-life balance was also a very important factor when wanting to quit for the majority of nurses.

Share of nurses in Canada who stated select factors were very important when considering leaving their job in 2025
Nurses from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland were randomly selected to participate in this research by direct e-mail invitation.
Nurses from Quebec and the Territories were encouraged to participate in this research by their local organizations and via CFNU social media posts.
The survey consisted of 107 questions, and the average time to complete the survey was 16 minutes.
