In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the highest number of deceases was recorded in Milan, at least since 2019. In the following years, the number of deaths decreased, settling at 33,000 in 202. In the same time frame, the number of births never exceeded 25,000 babies. Hence, the resident population of the metropolitan city has been naturally reducing.
