Station-based shared bike trips in Italy peaked in 2017, at nearly 7.6 million trips. By the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, trips had fallen to around 2.8 million trips but rose to 4.2 million trips in 2022. However, the number slightly declined in 2023 and was recorded at approximately 4.1 million trips.
In station-based bike-sharing schemes, hired bikes have to be returned to the station from which they were picked up or dropped off at another designated hire station.
