Car-sharing users in Milan were the most frequent users in Italian cities in 2023. That year, users in Milan made more than 3.28 million trips by shared cars. In Rome, where use is second-highest, 1.43 million trips were made. 98 percent of these trips were made with free-floating cars, despite station-based cars making up 14 percent of Rome's fleet.

In station-based bike sharing schemes, hired bikes have to be returned to the station from which they were picked up or dropped off at another designated hire station.
In free-floating bike sharing schemes, bicycles do not need to be returned to the same location where they were picked up but can be dropped off anywhere within a usually pre-determined geographic area.Â
