Road transportation was the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the European Union in 2023, having released roughly 750 million metric tons (MtCO₂). Public electricity and heat production was the second-highest emitter, with emissions amounting to 568 MtCO₂. Combined, these two sectors were responsible for approximately 50 percent of total EU CO₂ emissions that year.
