In 2023, Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) transaction values in Egypt jumped to around 172.8 trillion Egyptian pounds (3.61 trillion U.S. dollars). Since the Central Bank of Egypt introduced the RTGS in 2009, funds moved using RTGS have been generally increasing yearly. The only three years with a drop in fund transfers were 2011, 2012, and 2021. The first two years coincide with the mass mobilization starting in 2011 against the previous president Mohamed Hosny Mubarak. While the latter, was during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Although the overall value of transfers increased in 2023, the volume of transactions dropped compared to the previous year.
