Canada's total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were estimated at 702 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2023. Upstream oil and gas activities like natural gas production and mining at oil sands accounted for almost a quarter of this total, having emitted 200 MtCO₂e. Passenger cars were the second-highest emitters in Canada in 2023, with emissions of approximately 91 MtCO₂e. These came primarily from cars, light trucks, and motorcycles.
