Leading reasons to buy battery electric vehicles in Japan 2023

According to a survey conducted between August to October 2023 in Japan, the most commonly cited reason to consider purchasing a battery electric vehicle (BEV) was that it can be charged with a power plug for domestic use, mentioned by 47 percent of respondents. The environmentally friendly image of electric vehicles, as well as the state-of-the-art technology of electric vehicles were further popular reasons to consider a purchase.

*The target group was private households in Japan, regardless of automobile ownership. In automobile-owning households, the main driver of the vehicle bought most recently had to respond. In the other ones, the person in the center of the household economy had to respond. Households were randomly selected in a two-step process, first determining 300 survey points reflecting regional population sizes, then conducting random walks from each point.

This survey item targeted passenger car owners.
