The global direct carbon price averaged 23.2 U.S. dollars per metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (USD/tCO₂e) in 2023. Around one quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions were covered by carbon pricing mechanisms as of April 2024, compared with 13 percent in 2020.

Data was calculated by taking the weighted average of prices based on the percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions covered by each carbon price for each year. Data includes regional and subnational carbon prices, some of which overlap with national systems. For these overlaps, emissions are attributed to the carbon pricing initiative that was introduced first.
