Electric vehicle (EV) owners in Israel overwhelmingly prefer to charge their cars at home. In 2024, over ** percent of those surveyed, used their home charging ports frequently or occasionally, while a minority utilized public charging facilities. This figure highlights the importance of residential charging infrastructure in the country's transition to electric mobility.
Challenges in public charging
Despite the preference for home charging, the availability of public charging stations remains a concern for many EV drivers. The same 2024 survey revealed that some ** percent of users felt there was a shortage of fast public charging stations. Furthermore, the cost of public fast-charging was significantly higher than home charging, reaching *** Israeli shekels per kilowatt-hour among some providers, compared to *** Israeli shekels per kilowatt-hour at home. This price difference, coupled with the perceived shortage of public stations, may have contributed to the limited use of public charging facilities among EV owners.
Explosive growth in EV adoption
Israel's EV market has experienced remarkable expansion in recent years. In 2023, the number of electric vehicles more than doubled from the previous year, to nearly ******. Chinese manufacturers have emerged as dominant players in the local market, with BYD leading the pack by registering over ****** new cars in 2023. This surge in EV popularity is reshaping the automotive landscape, as Chinese brands now account for over ** percent of new EV registrations in the country.
'Other' home charging station refers to domestic stations owned by a family member, friend or neighbor.
The source notes that 9 percent of respondents who responded as 'never/ irrelevant' regarding their home charging usage, likely do not have a home charging port.
