In 2024, the average unemployment rate for Swiss nationals was 1.6 percent. For foreigners, the unemployment rate was more than double at around 4.6 percent. However, both the unemployment rate for Swiss nationals and foreigners have increased compared to the previous year.

The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) calculates the unemployment rate based on the unemployed registered with the regional employment centers in relation to the labor force according to structural survey data (SE) on working life (3-year pooling 2018 to 2020). Registered unemployed people are those who are registered with a regional employment center, do not have a job and can be placed immediately. It is irrelevant whether these people receive unemployment benefits or not.
