The carbon emissions at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China, were estimated at 0.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. This was a considerable decrease when compared to the carbon footprint of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The carbon footprint of the Winter Olympic Games is typically lower than the carbon footprint of the Summer Olympics.
Estimated carbon emissions at the Winter Olympic Games from 2010 to 2022, by event
(in million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent)
In 2018, the IOC published its most recent and stringent carbon footprint methodology, to which all Olympic Games must now conform. As such, Vancouver 2010 emissions are likely to be considerably underestimated.
