Prevalence of dental cavities in Mexican adults 2022, by age group

Dental cavities are a prevalent issue in Mexico, affecting a significant portion of the population across all age groups. In 2022, the lowest dental cavity prevalence among adults was 86.4 percent for 20- to 34-year-olds. This figure increases with age, reaching its peak among older adults, with a prevalence of 97 percent by age 65 to 79.

Cavities among the younger population 

The trend can also be observed in the younger population, where the lowest prevalence for tooth cavities can be seen in children of two years of age. Nearly half of two-year-old children visiting public health clinics in Mexico in 2022 had dental cavities, with the figure rising to almost 80 percent by age five. Children and teenagers had an average of 2.7 dental cavities, with the female population showing a higher number.

Soft drink consumption in Mexico

A diet high in simple sugars can contribute to tooth decay. Soft drinks are very popular in Mexico. According to a survey carried out in 2024, more than half of people across all age groups reported that they regularly consume soft drinks. The generation with the highest share was Millennials. Although per capita consumption of soft drinks in Mexico is forecast to decrease, it is estimated that in 2027 each person will consume an average of 134 liters.
