Autonomous vehicles are typically classified into six classes, from L0 to L5. L0 class vehicles are those with no automation and the driver is in full control. L1 class vehicles are those with certain Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that assist the fully responsible driver in certain cases. L2 class vehicles are those with partial automation, where the ADAS systems can control longitudinal and lateral dynamics simultaneously, while the driver must constantly monitor the system. L3 class vehicles are those that can take over driving tasks from the driver, who can occasionally perform non-driving activities and only intervene when warned by the systems. L4 and L5 class vehicles are those that operate completely autonomously, with L4 still subject to certain conditions.
