In the period August 2021 to August 2023, it was estimated that around nine percent of people in the United States aged 20 to 59 years had anemia. Anemia is more common among females than males, with around 14 percent of women aged 20 to 59 estimated to have the condition, compared to just 3.9 percent of men in this age group.

Anemia is defined as hemoglobin (Hb) less than 11.0 g/dL for children ages 2–4; Hb less than 11.5 g/dL for children ages 5–11; Hb less than 12.0 g/dL for children ages 12–14 and nonpregnant females age 15 and older; and Hb less than 13.0 g/dL for males age 15 and older, with Hb values adjusted for smoking following 2024 World Health Organization guidance.
