Between 2022 and 2023, among surveyed informal caregivers (usually family or friends) of hospice patients in the United States, the majority scored their hospice team well on patient care. Nine in ten said the hospice team treated the patient with respect. However, 26 percent said that the hospice patient did not always get the help they needed for pain and symptoms.
Percentage of informal caregivers of hospice patients who rated the hospice team on three patient quality measures from 2022 to 2023
The CAHPS (Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) hospice survey assesses the experiences of patients and their primary informal caregivers (friends or family) after the patient’s death (usually 2 months). Hospices may be exempt from taking part in the CAHPS survey if they had fewer than 50 survey-eligible decedents or caregivers during the "reference period".
*This measure was phrased as either: "The hospice team did not provide the right amount of emotional and spiritual support" and "The hospice team provided the right amount of emotional and spiritual support". Only two options were available.
Measures were usually not from single questions, but composite measures of multiple questions, found here.
