Number of fintechs in Europe 2008-2024
The European fintech sector experienced a remarkable boom during the 2010s, reaching its zenith in terms of new company formations during 2017 and 2018, when over 900 fintech startups were established in each year - marking the highest annual founding rates between 2008 and 2024. While the total number of fintechs continued to grow, the pace of new foundations declined significantly after this peak period. This trend culminated in 2024, which saw just 85 new fintech companies being established, the lowest number of annual foundations in the observed timeframe. Despite this slowdown in new entries, the European fintech landscape remained substantial, with a total of 9,225 companies operating in 2024, reflecting the cumulative impact of the sector's earlier explosive growth.
