Number of fintechs worldwide 2008-2024
The global fintech sector witnessed extraordinary expansion throughout the 2010s, achieving its peak in 2018 when more than 3,000 new fintech startups entered the market. Although the aggregate number of fintech companies continued to increase, the rate of new business formation declined markedly following this peak. This downward trajectory reached a notable point in 2024, with only 479 new fintech ventures being launched - the lowest annual figure for new establishments since 2009. However, even with this deceleration in new market entrants, the global fintech ecosystem remained robust, encompassing 34,317 active companies in 2024, demonstrating the lasting impact of the industry's previous period of rapid expansion.
