The cement and concrete industry will need to adopt a series of measures, including technologies, materials, and processes, in order to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) is forecast to contribute the largest share of reductions on the pathway to net zero, accounting for 36 percent of emissions reductions by mid-century. However, this technology is only set to play a significant role beyond 2030, when commercial viability and the necessary infrastructure have been established. Efficiency in design and construction could see around 22 percent of emission savings in the sector, while improving cement production efficiency would contribute another 11 percent.
