Net carbon dioxide emissions from cement production fell around one percent in 2022 year-on-year, to 580 kg CO₂/t of cementitious. The average emissions intensity of cement production worldwide has decreased by 23 percent since 1990. The Global Cement and Concrete Association is targeting a 20 percent reduction in net CO₂ emissions per metric ton cementitious by 2030 relative to 2020 levels. The emissions intensity of cement is projected to fall to around 20 kg CO₂/t of cement by 2050, in a net-zero-aligned scenario.
