Opinions on whether Norway should join the European Union vary by political party affiliation. For instance, the voters of the Red Party and the Centre Party opposed a Norwegian EU membership the most. In contrast, voters of the Liberal Party and the Green Party were most positive. In total, over 40 percent of the respondents in Norway were against the country joining the EU, compared to 37 percent in favor. Norway last held a referendum on whether it should join the union in 1994, when 52.2 percent of the population voted against joining the EU. Nevertheless, the country enjoys tight political and economic ties with the EU, and is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA).
