Get in touch with us nowDuring the period under review, retail revenue of grocery stores in the Netherlands has been significantly rising annually until 2024, when it registered a 1.5 percent decrease compared to the previous year. Conversely, during the same time period specialized food stores saw their revenue especially increase in 2024, specifically by six percent.
According to the source, the cause is to be found in the tobacco ban enforced nationwide as of July 1, 2024, which prohibited the sale of tobacco products and e-cigarettes in supermarkets, hotels, restaurants, and bars. Because the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) groups tobacco shops together with food stores, naturally the result of the ban was that grocery stores witnessed a revenue loss, whereas specialized food stores on the other hand experienced a considerable growth.
Groceries stores are estimated to see their turnover rise again by one percent in 2025, while specialized food stores should see their revenue growth slighlty decrease to five percent in the same year.
