Almost 108,000 stores were operated by retail franchise chains in Japan in 2023, with convenience stores accounting for more than half of the store network. Delivery and mail-order retailers controlled around 1,300 stores.

Figures are calculations based on an annual survey conducted online and via mail between June and July 2024. Supplementary surveys were conducted by fax.
