Japan's retail sector counted 305 franchise chains in 2023, with miscellaneous goods retailers including pharmacies, books and sports equipment stores, and secondhand shops as the largest category. Although convenience stores were one of the smallest industries, with 16 chains, the industry operated the largest store network in Japan.

Figures are calculations based on an annual survey conducted online and via mail between June and July 2024. Supplementary surveys were conducted by fax.
