Pedestrian deaths due to road crashes have been increasing in recent years. Fatalities among pedestrians had been on a downward trend between 2001 and 2009, but then began rising substantially. In 2022, pedestrian deaths reached their highest number over the past twenty-year period. In that year, pedestrian deaths on U.S. roads reached 7,522, compared to 4,109 in 2009.

Pedestrians are defined as any person on foot, walking, running, jogging, hiking, sitting or lying down who are involved in a motor vehicle traffic crash. A traffic crash is an incident that involves one or more vehicles where at least one vehicle is in-transport and the crash originates on a public traffic way.
