Grape production in China 2023, by region
Xinjiang autonomous region is the major grape production area in China. In 2023, approximately 3.5 million metric tons of grapes were produced in Xinjiang, more than two times the amount of grape output in Hebei province, the second largest grape producer in the country.
Grape production
Grapes have been growing in China for thousands of years. However, grape production was not significant until the late 20th century. Grape production volume in China started rapidly increasing since the 1980s and doubled in the past decade, reaching around 16.17 million metric tons in 2023. Currently, China is the leading grape producer in the world. Around 84 percent of all grapes produced in China are table grapes – the type of larger, seedless and less sour fruits that are intended for consumption while fresh. Wine grapes account for about ten percent of the total production volume.
Wine market
China produced around 320 million liters of grape wine in 2023, less than quater of the volume in 2014. The wine production volume as well as the Chinese wine consumption have been decreasing significantly in recent years. Most of the grape wine consumed in China is imported and comes from France, Chile, and Italy. According to consumer surveys, when shopping for wines, most Chinese choose red wines of known brands, with a touch of sweetness and less tannins.
